Ylang Ylang Essential Oil: Origins, Benefits & Skin Properties
Share
Intoxicatingly floral, deeply sensual, and remarkably effective — Ylang Ylang essential oil is one of the most beloved botanicals in both perfumery and natural skincare. Grown in the lush tropical islands of Southeast Asia and the Indian Ocean, this golden oil has been used for centuries to beautify skin, balance emotions, and promote a deep sense of wellbeing.
Origins & History
Ylang Ylang (Cananga odorata) is a fast-growing tropical tree native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia — particularly the Philippines, Indonesia, and the Comoro Islands, which today produce the majority of the world's finest Ylang Ylang essential oil. The name "Ylang Ylang" comes from the Tagalog word ilang, meaning "wilderness" or "flower of flowers."
The tree produces large, star-shaped yellow flowers with an extraordinarily rich, sweet, floral fragrance — often described as a blend of jasmine, banana, and neroli. The flowers are harvested by hand at dawn, when their fragrance is most intense, and steam-distilled to produce the essential oil.
In the Philippines and Indonesia, Ylang Ylang flowers have traditionally been scattered on the beds of newlyweds as a symbol of love and sensuality. In the Comoro Islands, women have long used Ylang Ylang-infused coconut oil — known as boraha — to nourish their skin and hair. In Victorian England, Ylang Ylang was a key ingredient in the famous "Macassar oil" used to condition and perfume hair.
Ylang Ylang essential oil is produced in several grades — Extra, I, II, and III — based on the distillation time. The "Extra" grade, collected in the first hour of distillation, is the most prized for its delicate, complex fragrance and highest concentration of active compounds.
Key Active Compounds
- Linalool — a calming, anti-inflammatory terpene that soothes skin and reduces anxiety
- Benzyl acetate & benzyl benzoate — contribute to its rich floral fragrance and have antimicrobial properties
- Germacrene D — a sesquiterpene with anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties
- β-Caryophyllene — a powerful anti-inflammatory compound that also interacts with the endocannabinoid system to reduce stress
- p-Cresyl methyl ether — contributes to its distinctive sweet, floral scent
- Methyl benzoate — has antimicrobial and skin-conditioning properties
Skin Benefits
Balances Oil Production
One of Ylang Ylang's most remarkable skin properties is its ability to regulate sebum production. It works adaptogenically — helping to reduce excess oil in oily skin while stimulating sebum production in dry skin — making it one of the rare ingredients that truly works for all skin types.
Anti-Aging & Skin Regeneration
Ylang Ylang supports cell renewal and helps maintain skin elasticity, reducing the appearance of fine lines and promoting a more youthful, radiant complexion. Its antioxidant properties protect against free radical damage — a key driver of premature aging.
Antimicrobial & Acne-Fighting
Its natural antimicrobial compounds help combat the bacteria that cause acne and blemishes, while its anti-inflammatory properties reduce redness and swelling around breakouts. It's a gentle yet effective ally for blemish-prone skin.
Soothing & Anti-Inflammatory
Ylang Ylang calms irritated, sensitive skin and reduces redness and inflammation. Its high linalool content makes it particularly effective for reactive skin types.
Promotes Emotional Balance & Reduces Stress
Perhaps Ylang Ylang's most celebrated quality is its profound effect on emotional wellbeing. Its rich, floral aroma has been shown in clinical studies to significantly reduce cortisol levels — the body's primary stress hormone — while promoting feelings of calm, joy, and emotional balance. It has long been used in aromatherapy to ease anxiety, lift mood, and promote a sense of inner harmony. Incorporating Ylang Ylang into your skincare ritual transforms it into a truly holistic self care experience — nourishing both your skin and your soul.
Aphrodisiac & Mood-Lifting
Ylang Ylang has a centuries-long reputation as a natural aphrodisiac and mood enhancer. Its intoxicating fragrance stimulates the release of feel-good neurotransmitters, promoting confidence, sensuality, and a positive emotional state.
How to Use Ylang Ylang in Your Skincare Routine
Ylang Ylang essential oil is potent and should always be diluted before applying to the skin — typically at 0.5-1% concentration (3-6 drops per ounce of carrier oil). It blends beautifully with:
- Jojoba, rosehip, or argan oil as a facial serum
- Shea butter or body butter for a luxurious body treatment
- A few drops in your bath for a deeply relaxing, skin-nourishing soak
- Blended with Frankincense or Helichrysum for a premium anti-aging facial oil
